About Scientific Anglers™

Where do you begin to describe all the ways science improves our lives? Well, if you're a fly angler you first look to Scientific Anglers™. At our labs in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Midland, Michigan, we bring to bear all the power for 3M scientific innovation to design and manufacture the best performing, most reliable products in fly fishing.

It starts with fly line, where we focus our technological expertise on formulating superior cores and coatings. We also lead the industry in designing tapers best suited to specific fly fishing applications. We apply that same advanced polymer and copolymer technology into our Scientific Anglers™ leaders and tippet material. Together, our line, leader and tippet add up to the finest matching system in fly fishing. Our reels are also the beneficiaries of vast experience and a commitment to quality unsurpassed in the industry - a commitment we've now extended into innovative fly boxes, fly tying tools, rod & reel cases, packs, gear bags and essential fly fishing accessories. Of course, our library of educational media is one of the most trusted sources of help in fly fishing.

History

A history of helping fly anglers get the most out of the sport.

Sixty years ago or so, even the most talented fly anglers could only achieve, at best, modest results. The only fly lines available were made with silk and had to be dried and treated every night just to get, at best, a couple of hours of mediocre flotation the following day.

Fortunately for all fly anglers - then and now - Leon Martuch, Clare Harris and Paul Rottiers went to work in Leon's kitchen with the mission of creating a new kind of high performance fly line. After years of research and testing, they introduced the early prototypes of what became Air Cel™, known today as the first modern floating fly line and still a quality offering from Scientific Anglers™.

Today our talented 3M scientists continue to experiment with new materials and processes, as well as new taper designs that make casting - and catching - more efficient and more enjoyable. You'll find innovations and breakthrough designs, all rooted in the work of three pioneers without whose ideas today's great fly lines would not be possible.
